Bertioga, São João Fort - 5º ano B - 2013

São João Fort

The oldest fortress built in Brazil remains intact nowadays. It was built in 1532; the São João Fort is located in the “Tupiniquins” Park, a green area between the Enseada beach and Bertioga stream.

Beforetime named as São Tiago Fort, the monument was built of wood to avoid and to defend the Indians, pirates and enemies attacks to the villages of São Vicente, Santos and São Paulo de Piratininga.

The first major reform of the monument took place in 1547, after the victorious attack of the “Tupinambás” who burned the fort and destroyed “Buriquioca” town, or Monkey's residence as Bertioga was called in Tupi-Guarani language.

From this fortress, the squad of Estácio de Sá departed to found the city of Rio de Janeiro in 1565.

In 1699, the fortress got some characteristics and in 1765, it was renamed as São João Fort due to honor of the saint.
It is also possible to combine culture, history and adventure in São João Fort, the representative building from the period of discovery of Brazil, and in Itatinga Village, the example of English architecture from the nineteenth century.
